Most people either rush through their rest because they feel like they should, or they scroll their phone for four minutes between sets without realising what that's costing them. 1. Rest periods should match your training goal, not your patience level
Longer rests of two to four minutes are appropriate for heavy strength work, where full nervous system recovery between sets allows you to produce maximum force output each time. Shorter rests of 45 to 90 seconds are appropriate for hypertrophy and conditioning work, where the accumulated fatigue is part of the stimulus. Resting the same amount between every exercise regardless of what it is means you're optimising for nothing in particular.
2. Too little rest between heavy sets is one of the fastest ways to stall strength progress
If you're squatting or deadlifting heavy and resting 60 seconds between sets because it feels like you should keep moving, you're going into each subsequent set under-recovered and consistently underperforming what you're actually capable of. Over weeks, this caps your progression well below your potential. The two to three minutes that feels like a lot is actually what's allowing you to produce a true effort on every set, which is what drives strength gains.
3. Too much rest during conditioning blocks blunts the metabolic effect
On the flip side, if your goal involves fat loss or cardiovascular conditioning and you're resting four minutes between every superset, you're removing the stimulus that makes that style of training effective. The elevated heart rate, the metabolic stress, the hormonal response that comes from shorter rest periods, all of that gets lost when rest is extended unnecessarily because the session "felt hard enough."
4. Your phone is making your rest periods longer than you think
This is one of the most honest things our coaches tell clients early on. Picking up a phone between sets almost always extends the rest period beyond what was planned, because time moves differently when you're scrolling. A 90-second rest becomes three minutes without noticing, which is fine if you're on a heavy strength set, and a significant problem if you're supposed to be in a metabolic block. Timing your rest periods, even just on the first few weeks with a coach, almost always surprises people.
5. Active rest is sometimes better than passive rest
For certain training styles, particularly circuits and supersets, pairing a demanding exercise with a low-demand movement for the opposing muscle group allows one area to recover while the other works. A set of heavy rows followed by light shoulder rotations, for example, keeps the session moving without compromising the rowing performance.
